My "Where have we heard that before?" was very sarcastic, I KNOW nothing new is coming.

Daniel uploaded the file that Tachyon gave him tonight. It is a rar file with a password. All the ARGers are trying to 'solve' the puzzle and figure out the password. I think they should just setup a distributed brute force attack, go to bed and let all their computers work together and do everything for them. If anyone is so inclined (and bored) you can download the file at rs59.rapidshare.com/files/17798604/53454d494f54494353

Need I point out that the haiku is WRONG. It's not a haiku. Haikus follow a strict set of syllable rules. 3 lines, the first and last containing 5 syllables and the middle line containing 7. Tachyon doesn't know her poetry and literary terms. Shame.
The haiku reads:
Where it all started The answer is before you A subtle clue I Drew
I'm a poet and an author. And most everyone has studied haikus at some point. I even wonder if the fact that the haiku is messed up is a clue in and of itself.
Not sure. But my picky, literature, poetry oriented mind had to point that out.
I feel better.
Edit: I'm pondering on the haiku and recalled that there is a Nancy Drew movie coming out soon. I don't know if that has much to do with anything.

Maybe they'll all bump into Nancy, I think the movie is set in Hollyweird. Maybe they've made a 'tie-in' deal and she'll help them solve the mystery...oh wait, the only mystery is why they keep running from someone who doesn't do anything. Never mind.

Evidently, using the Brute Force Attack method is considered cheating by the gamemasters. I think it would be fun to play "spot the sockpuppet" when one of the gamemasters pops in to nudge them in the right direction...

I wonder if it's as simple as looking on page 6 of the first Nancy Drew novel or even looking at Tachyon's 6th video... -shrugs- Thanks for posting that over at the phorum Milo

I really really really want to try those puzzles but looking over the threads, bleh. That looks hard work and very...numeric.

The password is "stratemeyer576". It is a combination of Edward Stratemeyer, the founder of Nancy Drew, (where it all started) and the number of syllables in the broken haikus. A further hint was the 11 'x's and the 3 'y's that were written on the note. stratermeyer - 11 characters, 576 - 3 numbers. If you want the contents of the file you can look in the phorum thread. This was the first time I tried to follow an OpAphid puzzle from beginning to end. I found it a little underwhelming, perhaps it was just one of the less interesting ones. What I did discover while looking around previous OpAphid puzzles was that there was a puzzle released on Dec 16th (my birthday) which resulted in finding a note from someone called Terry. This is clearly Glenn's giant shout out to my awesomeness.

Perhaps being bitter, but I love (note the sarcasm) how no one at the phorum realizes I was the first one to point out the incorrect haiku sequence as it ultimately was a huge contributer.
Eh, I know I'm being bitter or selfish. XD
But at least I know I uncovered something hearty to this puzzle.
-shrugs-
Unless, buried in the 38 pages of people asking for the password someone else discovered it first?

Further updates on the contents of the rar file: The contents of the file have been revealed and examined. A summary of the contents has been posted in the "in character" DB thread so that Bree and the Bookends now have access to this information. It's kinda detailed and contains several images so I suggest you have a look for yourselves. Not really sure that it is that meaningful, but take a look for yourself... A few comments: Although the realities of the "timing" of shooting vids in advance is an issue, I think it is neat if the phans are really interacting (duh, duh, duh, duhhhhh) with the characters by sharing information with them. The logic of Op/Tachy always sharing info in code doesn't make much sense to me. I can suspend disbelief on this part of it without too much trouble though, compared to some other "issues" I have with SOD and logic flow... I read most of the thread where the "sleuthing" took place and was generally impressed with the folks at work and the civility they had for each other... Sure, there was some outlandish theorizing but overall I thought that this process was kinda cool. They really need to beef up the "in character" interaction section of the phorum though. There is such potential there to really do some cool stuff, all it needs is someone to play along from the "trios" POV. I think that would make this thing MUCH cooler and make the project truly unique...I guess this is a legitimate "budget" issue though.

Unless, buried in the 38 pages of people asking for the password someone else discovered it first? its possible, but i didn't see the information before i cross-posted it onto page 22. its possible they had noted it in #operationaphid on IRC though. in retrospect, the solution doesn't seem too hard, but its amazing to see the different tangents that people went down.

Yes Milo, people went on some strange tangents. Sure, in hindsight, the password was relatively easy, but that's why hindsight is 20/20. When I saw it and the explanation, I groaned because I'd read a whole wiki article on on Nancy Drew and picked up on the incorrect haiku.
But, eh, you can't win 'em all.
I'm sure there will be future puzzles I can fret and whine over and maybe pick up a small clue and yell at my computer over and then just give up and wait for someone else to solve it. Lol.

maybe the logic of the coded messages is so Op can't read it if the message is intercepted?

So Tackywackykan knows where the cabin is? Why put the parcel in the car and not on the door step? Seems unusual and fairly unbelievable.
