Ugh. I hate this story.
I'm not sure if this is how it is meant to be read or not, but as I understand it the story they are telling is: * QtheC and Immortal came up with an idea * The Creators executed said idea * The Creators are now claiming ownership of said idea.
It all falls apart in the last point. A trademark has nothing to do with an idea or a concept. It is nothing more then a name or a logo. Thus The Creator's made themselves the legal owners of the name 12in12 and the logo they used to promote it. It seems almost insane for them not to do this considering the amount of advertising they did for the finale. To execute an advertising campaign using a logo and name you don't own is just beyond stupid. I wouldn't even be that surprised if MySpace insisted they owned the trademark to the 12in12 logo before they would use it in ads for the cross-promotion.
I'm all for calling the creators on it when they screw up or do something underhanded, but this just seems to be a confusion about the differences between a patent* and a trademark.
I will agree that the creators should have made it more obvious in the press that it was a fan idea, and ideally mentioned the fans by their screen names, but until now I don't remember hearing much complaining about that. And I didn't read much press but that that I did included Greg or Miles stating that the idea came from a fan and how using it was an example of fan interaction.
* I am not a lawyer, so patent maybe the wrong type of intellectual property right as well, but I'm sure a trademark is nothing more then a name - not an idea.

At the end of the comments it turns out they found a thread in the forum where the Creators said thanks to Q for the idea so things worked out. Typically angry Killthesmiley was up in arms but I think that cooled her down and its no longer an issue.

Just to give this topic something of a conclusion. Greg recently commented on the post himself.
Greg said...
Hey everyone,
So, first of all, of course it was your suggestion for us to do 12 in 12. It all came from QtheC suggesting a 24 in 24. Very cool. We thought it was an awesome suggestion and we did it because we knew you guys would love it and we want you to enjoy the show.
For legal reasons, and so no major corporation could take the idea that we spent a ton of time and money executing, we trademarked it. It was our attorney's suggestion (I don't practice law anymore, thank God).
Oh, you should know that Miles and I credited you guys with coming up with the idea in the all the interviews we did... whether or the not the reporters chose to write that was out of our hands. We do what we can. I'm sure you know (as we've learned) that reporters write whatever they want... just ask Amanda who we mention in EVERY interview and never makes print.
Thanks.
Greg

Since the drama has been diffused, do you want to just move this to the trash? I'm fine with it.

Seriously. The whole thing was SO blown out of proportion. Consider it a case study of how things snowball at the forum... had the sacrificial lamb not been Greg this time, he might have lost his job too.

There were exactly two posts (in two different places) that mentioned this on the phorum.

Hey... how do we know you weren't just deleting those posts? ooooooooh, I smell a conspiracy!

See the number of anonymous posters. Note that the reply from virginian9000 is more aggressive on LG15 Today than on the forum. I didn't delete anything. It's an interesting conversation, and I'm glad to see that it worked itself out. Not my fault no one took brought it up there.

It's interesting that the cove gets called for being overly critical and cynical when there's all this hate and paranoia brewing at the forum and spilling out over at the blog. Nobody here has been quick to assume that the c's are trying to rip us off. Actually, it's amusing how many people at the forum are concerned about the c's profiting from their ideas. I mean, come on, how many of those "ideas" are even worth stealing in the first place.

oweniscool, taking Jonas to the vet was a streak of creator bri$$iance and you can never tell me otherwise. LOL! Next, we'll find out it was all Jamie Gilmour's idea! I have noted that, in addition to the recent nod to the SLF, HyeMew pointed out the nod to PaulMark18. Are the C's now beginning to attempt to draw some of the old school fans back into the fold?

oweniscool, taking Jonas to the vet was a streak of creator bri$$iance and you can never tell me otherwise. Yeah, that was actually my idea but they stole it and then BK deleted all my posts. Under the TOS all my posts were their property too, so sux for me I guess. It's so frusterating that they made so much money with my idear and i gets no credit for it at the end of the video. They should have added a 5sec curtain that said "This episode was OIC's idea kthxbye." ETA: Ok, Apo beat me, but I'm sticking with my story.
