Over at the phorum Miles has posted a poll to gage the fans reaction to them doing an episode that has production integration. I like the idea, and have been saying for sometime that that is a great potential source of income for the series. I hope it works out. link

Sounds a little anti-climactic though... one little candy? It sounds like they had a lot more offers early on in the days of media attention and turned them all down, which if accurate makes this pretty sad. One offer, finally, when allegedly they had multiple before. I like the way they went to the fans on this though.

Whatever the situation...they didn't have to ask and for god's sake they have been financing our entertainment for a long time. I don't know but I am guessing that the "donate" thing did not garner a lot of revenue
Extra bonus points for even suggesting that they were "asking".

I’d say asking is really important. People, especially the youth, have a very strong distaste for advertisements and many will abandon something they actually enjoy if they feel they are having an ad forced down their throat. I think giving people a heads up and gauging their response was a great move.
Although I do think the vote will have as much effect as GoodGollyItsHolly’s decision did – and that is none at all. I have a hard time seeing them turn down any deals at this point.

slainte said it better and more succinctly than I could.
Trying to say the same thing, I ended up with a script (I could get a job with the creators, but I'm not willing to work for free).
Goodfried (or somebody like that): "Great news on the product placement front. We got an offer from a candy company." Miles: Oh, Thank God! *high fives*.....Man, you know the messageboard critics are going to crucify us for this. I'm not looking forward to reading pages of posts about this subject. Goodfried: Do you think they'll really care? Miles: Are you kidding? They care about everything! At least I think they do. Goodfried: Well, why don't you ask them? Miles: You know that's not a bad idea. If I present it to them like they are in on "the decision" they'll be so happy to be in on it, they won't care what we do. Goodfried: But..we're doing the product placement right? Miles: *laughs* Oh yeah, we're doing it, alright. Unless in a year you want me to be eating out of a dumpster like Bree did. Goodfried: Who? Miles: Bree...you know...Lonelygirl15? Goodfried: Oh, yeah, right...sometimes I forget there's a story. (They all laugh --- freeze frame as credits roll.)
