I love music, especially great singing, and on YouTube I have been most fortunate to have found some delightful vocalists plying their trade.
This being a truly democratic site, the good, the mediocre and the downright awful coexist side-by-side competing for your view, rating and comment.
In recent weeks two amateur singers have dominated the scene: miarose and ysabellabrave, each getting tens of thousands of views. Both have better-than-average voices and decidedly extroverted natures that allow them to shine on the special platform that is YouTube.
Mia and Ysabella are the current queens at this game, but there are countless others doing very much the same thing: putting themselves out there for the world to see and hear and comment on.
However where comments are concerned, unlike lonelygirl15, these singers are very controlling about what feedback gets approved. Many will allow only flattery and obviously favorable comments. Try and say something critical and it'll never show up.
I want to out ysabellabrave for this practice of suppressing objective criticism to her videos. 99.9 percent of her comments are rave reviews, even though her voice is very much a work in progress -- some would more charitably say a diamond in the rough. I dared to criticize the low sound volume on a recent video, with the best of intentions, and it never showed up. When I took this matter up on her YouTubeTalk forum my comments were promptly deleted.
Why is she afraid to take even the merest hint of criticism? It's not like people want to knock her off some high perch that she hasn't even reached yet; we just want to give her some badly-needed pointers on occasion.
It's too bad that YouTube's comments are sometimes so misleading when they're carefully, perhaps paranoically, vetted to present a one-sided response. It's also sad that some singers who censor their comments have such a thin skin. That won't serve them at all if and when they try to compete in the much bigger world outside of YouTube.
