Has anyone yet considered that Bree and her family could be Raelians? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RaelismIt covers so many bases: cloning ("more than one girl,"), having to move around a lot (to work with scattered cultists, perhaps?), your "woke me up in the middle of the night to go up on a mountain" incident in New Zealand (possibly in the cultists' belief that they would be contacted by one of the Elohim), the "parents worry that their daughter could leave the fold" angle, the Feynman worship (geniocracy) oddly melded with the Bree character's desire to poke fun at "conventional" science. I think there is a strong possibility that Bree's upcoming ceremony is a Raelian attempt at mind transfer (answering the notion of the "purity bond," especially if Bree was speficially bred/raised to be a receiver).

Thoughts on Raelism:
1. Weird. 2. I especially like how they changed their main text's title to include intelligent design (how savvy of them).
As it relates to LG: Pro-the theme of responsibility is important in Bree's comments after "my parents suck"
Con/food for thought-Would her parents be "disapointed" in her going hiking with Daniel if they were all about "sexual self-determination" and that each person is responsible for their actions...it seems like Raelism gives followers a considerable amount of freedom in these mundane, everyday situations. That said...they're still her parents.

Raelism works especially well *if* you go with the angle that Bree has been chosen to host some other entity.
If that were the case, then her parents would probably want to be cautious that she wasn't getting involved in anything which could potentially damage her body. Bree has described the "purity bond" as involving more/other than her sexuality; she is supposed to keep herself extremely healthy.
But as Bree's parents assumedly do love her, they would also want to promote her happiness. Daniel having stood by her during her difficult times at public school, coupled with Bree's father's talk with him (I don't believe the Daniel character has actually coughed up the full content of that convo) and his coming through halfway regarding her camp play, could have made the parents comfortable enough with him to allow the friendship.

Good point, noasinger, about her body hosting another entity. That brings her diet, exercises into focus.
I'm also liking Raelism for her religion because it seems like wikipedia is decidedly vague on the ritualistic side of the religion, so if these are college students I believe that by simply doing cursory research on Raelism...their videos align well with the lack of particulars on what they practice.
But why a picture or Crowley, then? Blast!

I think that outside the sphere of ceremonial magick, Crowley is appreciated by a lot of alternative religious types as one of the ultimate freethinkers. I haven't seen any Raelian-specific gushing about him, but those wacky Rael-heads named EMINEM as an Honorary Guide. And MADONNA. And ROSIE O'DONNELL! And BILL GATES!!
They think outside the box, I tell ya!
The Bree character could also be dabbling a little into Crowleyana out of her own interest, as well. Profoundly gifted kids typically have vast grab-bags of seemingly-unrelated interests. If you squint really hard, you could see her protest about Daniel lighting the "shrine" candles as just some playful messing with his head. That might well be giving that incident *less* credit than it deserves, though.

No way I'd give those people credit. During having to see them on tv during that "we cloned a baby" media fiasco, they came off as totally stupid. Never clever enough to come up with something so smart and endearing as LG and her facts.

Oh, I'm not suggesting that this is story is being produced by Raelians to promote their religion/philosophy -- if it were, Bree would never have insisted that "we believe in evolution!"
I just think that Raelism (or at least a fictional cult closely modeled on Raelism) is a good fit with a lot of the clues which the characters have dropped about Bree's religion. Despite being nonsensical hippies and despite believing an IQ test should be required to vote in elections, they seem to be public spirited and to lack Scientology's rabid litigiousness.
Despite the Clonaid weirdness of 2003, though -- or maybe having learned a lesson from that -- their media people do seem to have gained a great deal of savvy in the past three years. Their website is full of photogenic people frolicking about, they have streaming internet radio, etc etc.
(Ha, Ha, Clonaid! What if Bree is supposed to be Baby Eve all-growed-up through the Raelians' sooper-seekrit accelerated growth madskillz? that would be a HOOT! At least the Raelians had the balls to just make up their crown princess out of whole cloth. Scientology finally got *theirs* only by offering lucrative uterine-slavery/midget-celebrity-beard contracts to a series of starlets and finally finding one who was already pregnant, then hiding the baby away so people wouldn't notice she wasn't really a newborn!)
