I was wondering if anyone knows what is legal as far as filming strangers is concerned? If someone were to set up some pranks and film strangers (candid camera style) are there any legal repurcussions if you do not have their permission to be filmed?

it depends if the person finds out about the film! generally shows like candid camera get a person's permission to air the footage to avoid legal problems. i'm not sure what legal claims a person would have (invasion of privacy, a big maybe there), but a release avoids any disputes or litigation.

candid camera has had some funny stuff. on the car thing, there was one in a parking garage that guaranteed your car returned to you in 60 seconds for pickup. then the patron would hear sound effects of a car peeling out somewhere above them in the garage and a huge crash. then their car doesn't show up . . .
good post, jay. false light claims are crap in many jurisdictions, but the risk is still there.

I like the glue a dollar on the street prank-type stuff. Nothing really illegal. Just some ideas I had for short clips.
