Elixer, that's why I was pretty freaked out by the whole CiW craze. Here we had people going off deep into the wilderness trying to find a certain secret location. I do believe Cu_Roi went alone since I recall him trying to set up shots on his own. While it's hard to imagine someone lying in wait for days for someone to come along, it's not out of the realm of possibility, and one would think going deep into the wilderness alone to find something a stranger has recently left for you should just sound some warning alarms on anyone's common sense.
This is why the C's behavior with Cassie was so disturbing. Many people were under the impression they knew who was behind it. The Creators still (only semi-convincingly) insist they have no idea who it was- yet they took ages in disavoying it until long after it had already exploded. To say there was a real potential for danger, people being lured into the wilderness because they thought it was part of a series they loved and trusted, when in fact it (I guess) was being done by a total mystery stranger that we know nothing about should have been quickly and immediately addressed by the Creators because the situation it created was potentially dangerous to their fans. Their long silence only made us more suspicious of them and if they knew who was behind it, however as we've seen they have never had good response times when it's come to the huge issues, so that really might be more responsible than anything. If this meeting had been planned for sometime last fall, I am 99% sure the age disclaimer might never have gone up.

Safety is a great issue for discussion, and these posts are helping me form my perspective as I make plans for the future.
For me and Maddison Atkins, I knew from watching and participating in OpAphid that there was a system in place that insured a certain level of safety and an efficient protocol of communication. I also had the benefit of having Maddison interacting in the game and in the chat to guide people away from unsafe behavior. She also would aggressively shoo off folks she (I) would deem "creepy" or unnecessarily mysterious. I hope that empowered others to follow her lead.
After the first drop was retrieved in New York (from a restaurant/bar, during the day, using the drop protocol already established in OpAphid), I developed a trust with the players. During the 2nd drop in Kansas City, there was one person (flauta) who described the drop location as unsafe, and there was a lot of criticism based on that. Maddison (me again) responded that nobody should go to the drop location who felt it was unsafe. Then I got on the phone with some friends in the area and inquired further about the risks of the drop location. Everyone I spoke to felt like it was a completely safe location. So I ran with it. If I would have heard from anyone that the location was a dangerous spot, then I would made other arrangements to retrieve it.

As a PM, I am very uncomfortable sending anyone playing the game into a place that is unsafe or isolated. I tried to keep that in mind as I planted drops. On a side note, I like for drops to occur in busy places and right under your noses. On the legal front, I wonder what the ramifications would be if somebody was injured, robbed, or kidnapped while interacting with a game. Do game players need a "Play at your own risk" sign at every point? It would take away from the TiNaG aspect of the game. In my experience, it's about trust between a PM and the audience, and it is also about the community regulating itself. And one more thing, if somebody were leaving drops and acting like they were from my game, I would 1st try and attend to the situation in game, but if that proved fruitless, I would be very comfortable attending to it OOG. And another one more thing to note, I was surprised to discover that the PMs talk to each other. I was even contacted by people who were making potential ties to Maddison Atkins. So keep that in mind as we discuss this issue. The Creators of LG15 never spoke to me directly, but the admins of LG15.com tracked me down and requested OOG interaction. I complied. I'm not sure what would have happened, if anything, if I didn't. I guess I need to stop planning my drop in a country cemetery at midnight. Damn. Jeromy

country cemetary at midnight, with known axe murderers on the loose!! do it up!
i think the likelihood of a valid lawsuit against a PM for injury are small. not nonexistent, but a manageable risk. first, the person involved would have to be injured (which we hope doesn't happen.) second, the injury must have been somehow related to a decision of the PM (like a really unsafe drop site, like compton in LA or something -- not slipping off a random curb on the trip over) . third, the injury must be serious enough to get a lawyer interested in a lawsuit. fourth, the potential defendants must have some money to make a suit worthwhile. no insurance coverage usually makes for a nothing more than a small claims action. perhaps the owner of the facility used for the drop site could get sued under their CGL or homeowners policy.
i'm just cranky this week, so i've been contrary about the safety concern posts. i don't mean to discount people having concerns, but i also remember things i did at 16 that were far worse than this. and i was a pretty "good" kid. ETA: I realize i'm probably being a bit naive, but i hate assuming the creators's 1st law is murphy's law.

As someone who is never cranky, I feel the right to pass judgment on you is justified Milo . I do think these lines of discussion are worthwhile though, no matter what your POV is. Now...... About that volcano: ZOMG. Bree and the the Orderites have control over Global Geology!

My concern for safety wasn't about the location.
As soon as I saw the e-mail invitation leak, it looked like a scam to me for a couple of reasons. As I posted in several topics and a blogspot, I was sure it had to be some sort of gamejack: I couldn't believe that the c's would use a questionaire at the HoO website which allowed people of any age group as a source for invitations to their "secret" event.
It didn't look safe because it wasn't handled properly.
Jeromy, I was watching Maddy Atkins unfold, and I never once saw anything that looked as if it were handled in an unsafe manner. I imagine that you can probably tell that I would have mentioned it if I had seen anything that were being mishandled.
The only concern I ever mentioned with Maddy was a desire to see a disclaimer in the chat regarding copying chat to the forums, and surrealisticpill immediately implemented that suggestion.

Cool Apo. I hope that my posts above read like a guy who just wants to contribute his experience to the conversation. To be honest, I was really happy with your posts in the LG15 forum and the humorous edits you made. It's GREAT for everyone that people are willing to say Watch Out. Keep it up.

To me, your posts do read exactly as you intended. I hope that my posts in this topic read like a guy who wants the c's to remove their heads from their asses when planning live meets.
