Am I alone in wishing that they had been clever enough to survive until the Ceremony? If only they hadn't been so arrogant in registering the site, refusing to do their homework on digital privacy. This would have been way more interesting as a giant media scare, it would have made a better artistic point, and it would have at least had an ending. At this point I think that is indeed the most valid solution (even though it isn't) to the mess they have created. Perhaps they would have been smart enough to hire an executive producer that could realize Mesh's vision to produce a compelling film. Miles could direct and edit (which he is fairly good at) and Greg could schmooze the industry types. I bet they would have made a LOT more money too...

I still think they would have been reviled for fooling the nation with a false missing person story. No one knows how it would have turned out or if it would have gotten media traction seeing as there's no real proof she existed, but if that's the case when they popped up saying "foooled you!" I don't think everyone would be willing to just say "oh wow, great job. You got us and made us worry for nothing! We love you!"

Am I alone in wishing that they had been clever enough to survive until the Ceremony? [snip] it would have at least had an ending. So the ending would have been Bree disappears, the last video being "The Ceremony Is Tomorrow :)" That is actually one of my favorite videos and I propose we just pretend that it WAS the last video. It would be a cliffhanger ending, which would have infuriated me (cliffhangers really bug me), but it would have saved me the torture of the past 7 months, which didn't succeed at providing any more closure than a cliffhanger would have anyway. A movie deal would have been nice for them, and they could have (I expect) gotten some money out of the whole project, but even if they didn't get it like CG suggested, a mystery ending would have still been better than watching the slow, agonizing death and impending putrefaction of the series. I still think they would have been reviled for fooling the nation with a false missing person story. [snip] I don't think everyone would be willing to just say "oh wow, great job. You got us and made us worry for nothing! We love you!" I don't think the cliffhanger ending would have been such a concern since LG15 was already revealed to be a production by that time. I guess if you guys hadn't uncovered them, people might have worried.

From my perspective I don't think they ever would have gotten a movie deal (and they still won't) because they didn't have a movie planned out. The six month build up is all great set-up but the big question from financing companies and/studios is "what happens next?" And the real question would be "can we see the script?" There doesn't seem to have been a movie script written or any real idea what happened after the ceremony (made painfully clear by what did happen) so there wasn't any movie to be made. The best producer in the world couldn't solve this problem. The best they could have gotten was some sort of development deal.
An interesting example of using the internet to roll out a movie is what JJ Abrams is doing with 1-18-08 aka Cloverfield aka Slusho. It seems headed in an ARGish direction that will culminate in the release of a movie that in theory will entertain both the group following online and the general audience who just wants to go see a movie
