Yeah I saw that there and commented how awful it is for people in the spotlight to have this sort of thing come back and haunt them. There were other pictures there which were thankfully not as bad as this one appears to be! But seriously, he went to a real high school, and NOW people are recognizing him- I'm wondering why this never happened back during the hunt? I am by no means a well known person, but it is hard for me to believe that if I was in Yousef or Jess's place that no one at all would ever recognize me and come forward blowing my cover. It just seems like the number of people who were watching made it statistically likely, which no amount of wearing sunglasses and staying indoors could have prevented! Makes you realize how much of the magic of the August-early September time could have been squandered and ended anti-climactically if someone had actually realized this sooner.

after the mixed media show one night a few weeks ago, i chatted with someone who went to school with jessica in salisbury, maryland, for one year. he wasn't close to her, but he figured it was supposed to be a secret and thus didn't say anything about it. he probably wasn't the only person like that.

Yeah I think most people don't bother playing the 'I knew someone who knew him when he was five!' card.
A couple of years ago on reality TV show Big Brother (here in Aust. it's pretty big) one of the housemates was a girl who I did know very well in my childhood/teen years, and I even had pictures, and home videos with her in them. I probably could have sold them to a magazine, TV station, or something, as she got quite popular at one stage. But I didn't tell anyone about her even though I don't like her.
So yeah, I just think most people kind of live and let live.

Though elix I think things are totally different between knowing a game show contestant and coming across someone on youtube who makes extremely popular videos under an assumed name. If you recognize them, you almost definitely would say "wait a minute, I know her!! That's Jessica!" The Creators just got lucky no one took that to the next step and made that exclamation publically.

That's very true, Hye. My reasoning for not divulging her identity was because I know that reality show contestants are easier to track down than TV stars, and I didn't want to be responsible for anyone harassing her family etc. It could be the same with a YouTube star, as they are not wealthy enough to have protection. But you're right it is a bit different, and I know that not everyone cares about other people's well-being, so it is a wonder. I guess IMS and even vlogging isn't as big in Aust/NZ as it is in the US though. Maybe not as many people over here have broadband. It's still is fairly expensive here, and I'm assuming it would be in NZ too. Most people I know only know of YouTube because they've seen it on the news in the latest "drunken youths post video of their crime" stories on current affairs shows. Or they watch short clips from TV, movies, sports etc - or anything that this 30secs long and makes them laugh at work. YouTube only really started being publicised over here after Lonelygirl15 was broken out as being fake. There was a little bit of press on her before she was outted, but only because TheHill made a rap about her. The whole LG15 thing hasn't made much of a splash in our media. They tend to report more on TheHill88, Emmalina and the SickPuppies - basically anyone who is Australian. I assume Jessica would have gotten a bit more press in New Zealand, but only after she was outted. So that could explain Jess... But as for Yousef...lol, I dunno... maybe he was a quiet kid who kept to himself at school. The guy that posted the pictures couldn't even remember him.
