Some useless stats I wrote up while I was bored and couldn’t sleep this evening. Disclaimer – I am not a statistics student and likely the following breaks a bunch of rules and doesn’t actually make any sense, regardless here goes
The Phorum has a total of 4,821 threads and a total of 210,282 posts. Therefore the average number of posts per thread is 43.62 – it sounds like a fair bit, but really it is almost 3 pages of posts. Well maybe averaging 3 pages on everything single topic that someone starts a thread on is a lot. I’m not sure, let’s keep moving along.
The Cove has a total of 1,191 threads and a total of 13,713 posts. Therefore the average number of posts per thread here is 11.51. Close to, but not quite a full page of comments for each thread. But to be fair those are counting comments from missing Cove member (there are some many of these now that our milk cartons are starting to look like photo mosaics) Joss as just one comment, when clearly a Joss comment is equal to at least 4 regular comments.
So, some quick comparisons show that the Phorum has 4.1 times the number of threads and a massive 15.3 times as many posts. I think this is just because the Phorum has so many more members – 6.2 times as many.
Let’s see what the likely hood of any random member of each forum would be to post in any random thread (this is where my maths will likely frighten any real student of statistics). Since each Phorum thread has on average 43.62 posts the chance that one of them is made by any random Phorum member is 1.1%. At the Cove the chance that a random member made a post in a random thread is 1.8%. Here the numbers start to look a lot closer. Unfortunately, I have no idea if this really means anything.

Assuming there's an equal likelihood of each poster posting, which i think you must for this model, these stats seem accurate. I'm not sure they have any meaning either -- perhaps one could argue that 1.8% shows a more tighly-knit community than the 1.1% figure.

I think these numbers are pretty much the same across any forum. Take a look at this one I whipped up about the Cove. 6 Users (1.3%) are responsible for 1/3 of all posts. 19 Users (4.3%) are responsible for the next 1/3 of all posts. 417 Users (94.3%) are responsible for the remaining 1/3 of all posts. 5.6% of the Cove population is responsible for 66% of all the posts. I'm not on there! I fee; like I have let myself down. Mind it's not like I post much of any importance anyway!

The Phorum only has 3500 or so memebers? That's fairly suprising to me, I thought it would be a lot more. Although, is it possible to view the phorum without being registered?

Although, is it possible to view the phorum without being registered? it is possible to view the phorum without registering. even today at the phorum: "Most users ever online was 497 on Fri Sep 08, 2006 9:45 am" - i.e., the morning after the creators posted their 1st message. the most traffic at the main site goes to the main page to watch the videos and no farther.
