Smosh's latest video, uploaded TODAY, is already featured on YouTube. This is extremely odd, 1. considering it's a Tuesday and so I doubt the editors and such are actually at work today, and 2. because they presumably have quite a backlog in e-mail and if smosh wrote to them asking to have their new video featured, it wouldn't happen with same-day service. This means either Mia was surfing YouTube today, saw that they had a new video, loved it, and added it to the main page asap.
This whole thing should be of interest to lonelygirl fans/former fans 1. because smosh is in second place of subscribers and are on a faster path of gaining them than lonelygirl, which means every day we get closer and closer to her being unseated as number 1, and 2. because most of the top 20 users have been featured in some way, whether by main page or the far more deadly sign-up screen suggestions- (which I know for a fact can get you about 180 subscribers per hour without fail- and when considering MiaRose was on that screen alone for 1 week it's not hard to figure out she rose to the top not by being a good singer as she loves to brag but by that special treatment alone). Lonelygirl15 has always been the exception to this.
Alright after all that needless analysis, I'm actually going to watch it to see if I believe this actually deserved a feature. As an avid smosh-hater, I follow their videos out of anger at the stupidity of humanity because of how many people find their episodes to be utterly hilarious. A few half-sensible people have been noting that the normally bad smosh videos have gotten even worse as of late, but it seems most people are too content saying things like "I COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING- 5!!!!!!!!!!!!"
40 seconds into this and they are horrible actors. Not sure if that's because they are doing that on purpose, or because they truly are horrible actors. The ode to Rocky was weak at best, and when it was finished and he ran back with the caption "four years of training later", I thought it would have been funny if his subject was found to have a huge long hair, or beard, or both. I mean, this whole thing is dedicated to him getting prepped to give him a haircut right? One would think four years without said haircut would not leave it as exactly the same length as when he left, but whatever. Yes I know I am looking to deep into a shallow video, but I that is the one thing so far which could have been funny but it was blown.
It's funny when he cried at the haircut's beauty... because I thought it looked pretty bad. The twist ending left me wondering-- umm, so I wasted 5 minutes for that? And then they make some dumb faces and it ends.
I'm sorry but that might have been their worst thing to date. Well actually they've had even worse, for example "Spiderman, Spiderman" was most likely the most terrible crap to ever grace youtube, but still. I guess YouTube liked it because it had the making of a tour de force, but in true smosh style it was utterly idiotic and I can't believe this kind of thing was featured- and so immediately at that. I definitely think, as we have speculated, youtube is giving smosh some extra promotion on purpose- though I know smosh had signed their soul away to livevideo or one of those users so perhaps their non-exclusivity nixes that conspiracy.
The average account with a featured video usually garners a couple hundred subscribers from it, but definitely not as much as one would think. Since most watchers very well might already be subscribed to them as well, that number could be even less, though their always high rate of new subscibers will make it very hard to tell.

smosh is pretty bad, really. i noted this video did not say "brought to you by livevideo" which i saw on the last one i bothered to watch. this new one leads you to smosh.com, but "due to traffic" the same video is an embed of the youtube video instead of someone other option. smosh has 77,745 subscribers compared to 91,204 for lonelygirl15. it has been slowly catching up (though i suspect sometimes whether all of smosh's subscribers are legitimate) the youtube stars blog which maintain some archive information on subscriber growth shows that smosh is REALLY catching up on lg15. here's a chart i made from the information: edited: fix link

i noted this video did not say "brought to you by livevideo" which i saw on the last one i bothered to watch. Hmm... perhaps there's actually something to this? Youtube lured them back from LV (which I hear is a sinking ship anyway?) with the promise of (hopefully not multiple) features and possibly even some google stock!? Addendum to my previous rant: I hadn't even seen their April Fools episode when I wrote it. That episode is idiocy beyond all comprehension. Seriously, one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. The only reason I can't say definitively the stupidest thing I've ever seen is because of the other smosh videos in existence. What I can't understand, meanwhile, is the ridiuclous amount of positive comments they get. I read through the 100 most recent comments to April Fools... and ONE of them was negative, saying "I don't see what all the hype is about". And that's hardly earthshattering. This is so odd because youtube is notorious for its haters, and one would think the number two channel would be like a magnet to them. I've submitted comments before and it didn't say the comments were moderated... but do they have the time to read them all and delete negative ones? Because whatever the case I just can't believe comments could be that unanimously positive for something so stupid on a site so negative. And I've noticed the same sort of only-positive comments on their other videos as well, perhaps the haters, being stupid, are drawn to liking smosh because it too is stupid? I guess the world will never know.

Speaking of stupid April Fools videos- check out this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6RzsPDPfJIThis guy is daxflame, how could we have missed him? He has way too many videos to watch them all, but the first couple are truly disturbing- like to the point where you want to go out of your mind. Fake, of course, he's like lonelygirl15 with Asperger's. He's managed to turn acting autistic into an art form which has included pouring chocolate syrup all over himself, one video hiting the magic 500k mark, and #43 subscribed of all time on youtube. Thankful, unlike smosh, many of his commenters lament just having watched them and vow to never watch again. Most likely they all do though, because face it, it's hard to look away from a train wreck. Doesn't mean they like it though. Those that do profess their love for him and his series though most likely are doing it in a demeaning manner and/or just like being freaked the f out. This poses the question though- if you could become a youtube celebrity, but have to act demented in order to do so and be laughed at (not with) by tens of thousands per episode... is that something to be proud of? And is it really worth it? Apparently some sleuths seem to have discovered (expose' videos have been taken down from youtube for TOS violations so I can't see them for myself) that his whole family is involved in the entertainment business and that his dad runs a youth talent agency in Texas. So his dad put him up to this? That's just sad. I mean what is he expecting... the best his son could get out of this are guest apperances on Nickelodeon and Disney shows as "the weird kid", and last I checked that isn't a dream career path. Hall of Horrors (even though it's fake, you know there are people out there like this, which makes it all too real and disturbing none the less): Episode 1, meet "Bernice"!- www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALPOqESM3F8Episode 2, 'coincidentally' now that introductions are out of the way, the plot is set up as we discover he has a friend he wants to impress (nothing is too scary...yet)- www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfoo216yxDkEpisode 3, There are no words- www.youtube.com/watch?v=bybmhr8REkMEpisode 32, "Tape Face", in which he puts 60 pieces of tape on his face and rips it off. I believe this episode really got him his notoriety, and based on the "Thanks YouTube" in the description perhaps it even got him featured. It also got him on G4TV, during which the host made fun of him and expressed his desire to punch daxflame in the face (yes turns out it was, which explains why he was able to get 500k)- www.youtube.com/watch?v=QurrQsNJy_QEpisode 35, Daxflame gives his opinion on some of the top youtubers and why he deserves to be ahead of them. I find it really funny that he discounts many of them for being "fake", when of course he's fake too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=17woOMMhPPoAnd we'll end it with the disturbing chocolate syrup episode- www.youtube.com/watch?v=69hd2C2mIa4

I'm with you guys.
You know what the featured videos list is like? It's like if you took the employees of a Blockbuster video rental store and instead of letting them have a little shelf off in a corner of the store marked "employee favorites" you let them decide what movies are going to open in theaters every weekend. This is madness.
I know the YouTube editors watch the people on the most subscribed list, and that affects their choices. Shortly after Renetto told people to subscribe to Khayav, Khayav was featured. That was no coincidence. Smosh is the latest popular account to be featured more than once. TheHill88 and Boh3m3 are two examples of people who were featured once before they were popular, and again after they were already on the most subscribed list.
Because I'm sure the YouTube editors follow the rankings closer than anyone, I have to wonder that Smosh maybe was featured at this particular moment in time because YouTube saw that they were on pace to overtake LG as number one most subscribed and want to hurry that up, to seal the deal as it were, to create news of a new number one and get people talking about it both on and off YouTube. I don't think they even care that it's smosh. If it were brookers in the number 2 spot at this point, I bet they'd feature one of her videos. This is all speculation of course, but there's no question that Smosh is receiving favorable treatment, and there's no way in hell it's because their latest video is currently one of the most entertaining of the literally millions of videos on the site.
edit to add: I just saw your post about daxflame, hye. How did we miss him? We didn't. I have to confess, I saw him a few weeks ago when I noticed he was on the most subscribed for the week. A bit after that I believe "Tape Face" was featured, which is the reason for the 500k views. While my first instinct was to post about it here, by the time I sat through nearly all of his videos, trying to ascertain what the truth or purpose of them was, I decided that whatever the case, I just didn't find them that entertaining, and he was getting popular enough that sooner or later someone else would post about him, so I just let it go. But even though I don't care for him, he does deserve some mention here, so thank you Hye for picking up the slack.

oh, and daxflame, he was listed on the vidstars site i believe as someone else who will do product placements for money. that vidstars site seems like a scam in itself to me. Like they find instances of products in videos, then claim they were behind placing them there just to hurt those people's "street cred." Seems petty, but it got our attention. And when that "lonelygirl is a fraud" red-headed whatshisname is connected to it (or behind it?) it wouldn't surprise me if that's all it is. I've been wrong plenty of times before though.

Why you all hating on us for? We don't do anything to offend people, we just do it to make them laugh. Lay off! If you think you know everything, and know what is funny and what people want to watch then you go and make some videos, and stop hiding behind you wordy analysis on a forum.

It's not my fault I can't speel our own name. Anyway, we do make people laugh, but not everyone. I think you would struggle to find any comedian that EVERYONE in the world loves. Why don't you make us laugh for once? Because you can't?

Haha this is incredible. Clearly an Anchor Covite messing with us, because I HIGHLY doubt smosh monitors our board nor are they so easily contactable that they would somehow find out (at 4am their time) that someone was badmouthing them at the Cove and would swoop in with a mis-spelled name to talk to us.
If you were Ian and Anthony I'd love to have you as members of the Cove, but that's obviously not the case.

I have to agree that I have never found Smosh entertaining either. There are several YouTubers in the most subscribed to pages that I just can't see the appeal of - including Brookers. I've sat down and tried to get through all of her videos and give her a fair go, but no. Just don't see the appeal. As for their video being featured the first day it was posted, this does concern me a lot. Not because it could be "first!!11 " and beat LG, but because I would really hate for our society to "deem" it as the most valuable channel on YT. And also if it is achieved through unfair means. The YouTubeDramaKing guy that keeps getting banned has mentioned a lot of these things seem to somehow link back to Damien Estreich et al. He is the YourTubeNews guy. Sorry if this is old news to everyone, but I'll post up the info anyway. Encyclopaedia Dramatica Article (please note, much of it is tongue in cheek): www.encyclopediadramatica.com/index.php/DamienestreichWhat I found particularly interesting about him was the mention of the KKA - The Kewl Kids Association, and all of Damien's deals and what seem to be scams, with them. www.encyclopediadramatica.com/index.php/The_Kewl_KidsJust read it. Even though it is a bit of a joke, I found that after reading about all of this, a lot of things that didn't really make sense on YT, started to come together a bit. I don't know if Smosh has some kind of a deal with them, but since Damien features a lot of the videos, I wouldn't put it past them. I mean, there is no way Damien can make any money out of LG, but maybe he and the other YT editors can make some out of Smosh if they become the ones who bring down LG from the first position. It would be big news. More than a dollar is to be had here. Also to note, Damien has just posted a video where he is asking YouTubers what they want to see in featured video content. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMoRIYEiNOk. Covering his tracks? Or trying to better his image? ETA: It seems Damien is having some sort of an influence on TheHill88 lately. It makes a bit of sense since she seems to do "shout outs" to members of the KKA regularly, and in her 'Circle Circle Dot Dot' pirate video (which she has taken down now...hmmm....) she specifically mentioned Damien and and chatting to him on Stickam in her video description. Is she sucking up to the KKA? Anyway, I must admit that I also noticed Daxflame a few weeks ago, when there was all that controversy with EclecticAsylum. ( www.youtube.com/profile?user=EclecticAsylumArt) For those who don't know him, he paints/draws etc. celebrity YouTubers but also does regular YouTubers by hosting competitions. DaxFlame entered as a regular YouTuber, which caused EclecticAsylum to post this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbUARzEPPFEThen there was much uproar, which caused him to say he wasn't being serious, and he painted him anyway. With chocolate syrup. lol. I began to watch Dax's videos and the "fake" alarm bells went off, but I haven't been able to make up my mind about him yet. It is pathetic, but I keep going back for more. I haven't watched all of the videos yet, mainly just the first few. Hye is right, I think: train wreck effect.

smosh is now just over 10,000 subscribers behind lg15. i don't know whether all of smosh's near subscribers are legit, but at this rate, they will pass lg15 before the end of april. this new video that got featured now has over 460,000 views.

In this case, I think the LG15 creators had better stop with the delay in posting videos to YouTube, improve the quality and credibility of the series and also concentrate on ways to get people talking about it again. Youtube is a strange, strange place.... with magical men from gumdrop houses on Lollipop Lane... I don't get it. Some of the most brilliant videos have nothing but hate comments, while some really mediocre, sickening or downright boring videos don't have a bad comment written about them, and the people that make them sky rocket to the most subscribed page. I don't know if Damien Estreich is behind stuff like this or not, but I do detect definite shenanigans occurring at YouTube. Someone - or probably many someones are doing their best to control the site by making money out of this new breed of YouTube "celebrities." It's a conspiracy I tells ya'! A conspiracy! But seriously, something is up... As a rule of thumb I always think that if something doesn't make sense it's because there is lying/fabricating involved.
