www.salon.com/ent/video_dog/classic/2006/09/08/lonegirl/index.htmlI'm not sure if you'll need a login, so here's the copy: "Lonelygirl15, brought to you by. . . Despite the remarkably credulous coverage she's received, it was always pretty clear to some observers (and yes, including us) that the YouTube phenom "lonelygirl15" was some sort of marketing hoax. The Los Angeles Times, while not understanding the true nature of it all -- is it for a movie? A TV show? A new way to launch a starlet? -- finds a link from lonelygirl's winsome posts to the Creative Artists Agency. But seriously, how did anyone watch any of her posts (especially the one below, her debut) and not conclude that her studied shyness, cliched goofiness, expert camera work and sound-editing, did not come straight from the superslick halls of Hollywood's hype machine. We've seen more honest emotion on "Laguna Beach." Shows "Dorkiness..." via YouTube

Haha, my old informant Kim had actually brought up Laguna Beach when we discussed what Bree could be. She said that she was eventually "outed" for being at least partly scripted, so was thinking that to add a tinge of reality they took things to the next step by putting it in vblog form. I've never watch LB, but the small part of the episode I saw once seemed very fake. The girls were discussing their private drama amongst each other, seemingly totally oblivious to the camera filming them. Kind of reminds me of Daniel and Bree's now famous "on-screen" fight over her religion. The odds they had a fight and then edited it and uploaded it despite their still seething anger was about 1 in 1337 zillion.
