Please tell us about other alternate reality style games you've found on the internet. I'll start us off: newcomers to ARGs will be especially interested in the BBC's terrific Jamie Kane, a detailed mystery about the death of a boy-band popstar. Jamie Kane is self-contained and all-ages friendly. It takes about two weeks to finished if you play every day, but there is no time limit. This is entry level alternate reality, so the storyline is linear and the various puzzles are easy to solve. The plot sends you to various AR websites and programs around the world, to hack into airline systems, hotel security cameras, PDA memory cards -- you name it, this game will have you do it. It's almost a tutorial in websleuthing. But the greatest charm in the game is the interactivity -- almost every day, you are required to enter an IM chat with one or another of the characters. The responsiveness of the engine driving the chats is nearly damn spooky and seems to have a quirky sense of humor. UK players can even opt to receive telephone messages during a couple of the puzzles; players outside the UK should be careful when registering to that the game will feed you alternate methods of getting the phone-based info. I believe Jamie Kane is about a year old, but when I played it this spring, its staff were still very prompt and responsive to questions and requests for assistance. Hey, that's pretty cool. I'll give it a go when I have some time and post my thoughts after I've tried it out.

I also played a significantly smaller game for Dan Brown's "The DaVinci code". You can find it at www.randomhouse.com/doubleday/davinci/main.html and it only takes about an hour. First ARG I ever played, so it blew my mind. In retrospect, it's pretty cheesy, but rather fun for what it is.
