We have a huge gay community at my school and some of them are in the Greek system. I like the Greek system. You can't just look at that one aspect of going Greek and choose to dislike it. They're social clubs and some of them freely accept openly gay members. Not everyone is going to like gays or accept them. It's a fact of life and I think saying Canada or London is somehow more accepting of gays just because there's parades is ludicrous. Lots of different cities in the U.S. have parades celebrating the LGBT community. In fact, New Orleans (where my school is located) has one of the largest gay festivals in the south called Southern Decadence. It's amazing.

We don't have the greek system in Canada, and after reading that I can't be more happy. Sorry, but Canadia is not as free of the Greek scourge as you think. The sorority I belonged to in college (Delta Gamma) has chapters at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario; the University of Alberta; and the University of British Columbia. ETA: there were a couple of "out" lesbians in my sorority when I was there in 1976. And this was in Oklahoma! where we have the Tulsa Pride parade.

I guess it is my own fault that I tend to flow between my ideas and nonsensical ramblings with little or no transition. Sorry, but Canadia is not as free of the Greek scourge as you think. We are getting way way off topic, but anyways, to my knowledge all the sororities\frats in canada are not official, in that they have no relationship to the school at all. They are just a house where a bunch of people live that like to stick greek letters on the outside. Perhaps that is all they are in the States too, but I always believed they had some official function, or so Animal House taught me.

You have to register a fraternity or sorority with the school for it to be school sanctioned and receive funds from Student Affairs. Usually your Student Government system will distribute these funds to various clubs and fraternities and sororities. There are two different kinds of frats: social/service and academic. Academic based fraternities generally are co-ed and are comprised of people who all have a certain academic GPA or field of study in common. Social/service frats are based on the social aspect of a fraternity that you are familiar with in films. They have to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to exist and on my campus it is a HUGE competition between all the various organizations (greek or otherwise) in who will rack up the most hours. It's a lot of fun!

OK, swings down off branch for a RL tale of yore: I worked as a waiter all through college at sorority houses, two different ones. Some of the stereotypes about these girls are true, but overall they were pretty cool to hang with. It was pretty much a drinking and, uhm, dating kinda job. We got paid in food for an hour shift waiting on tables and washing dishes. The university owned bar had $0.25 drafts for Happy Hour, I was hammered for every dinner shift! Best (non romance) story: I got fired from the first one for eating thirteen (!) grilled cheese sandwiches at lunch one afternoon. Soooo, I kissed the prettiest one (really) and walked over to one with even Hawwwter girls and had a job by dinner. The usual mayhem ensued. Damm those were fun days.

It's two competing reproductive urges: familiarity vs. the desire to propagate healthy off-spring through genetic diversity (this is why multi-ethnic people are, on average, so much more attractive; a biological response to the strong genetics). That's an interesting theory, I'm not sure how true it is, the peoples of the African continent are the most geneticaly diverse of all the peoples of the planet, because that is where the species originated. www.science.psu.edu/alert/Tishkoff1-1999.htmSo by that logic we would all be irresistibly attracted to Africans.

I think our humble admin is used to me wandering grossly off-topic and somehow relating every thread to the wonders of malt beverages and associated antics. For me, one of the best things about this kind of (intra-fan) "interaction" is to allow the fans to relate to the characters, plot, etc. More importantly, we get to relate to each other...It gives more immediacy to the story I think and forms a basis for our bond here. (yes, I realize we are supposed to be discussing the TV show here) Oh well, back OT: Yeah Hawwwwt Sorority Girls!

speaking of going Off-Topic a bit, all this talk of fraternities and gays reminds me of the don lennon song "haze", then i got an email this morning linking me to an online peformance by don of that very song (done billy bragg solo style -warning poor quality): www.youtube.com/watch?v=gElF5X1pB6kkey line: yeah, there's a lot of nudity, thats why those groups attract so many gays i haven't watched the show other than a few clips of jessica at youtube, so i can't really comment on its quality.

Hmm... the above robtomorrow and jayhenry musings sound like a job for... dun-dun-dun-duh! Jared Diamond! Guns, Germs, and Steel seem to be a lot about genetic diversity and differences amongst people across the globe... or at least that's what it's looked like the two times I'm skimmed through it in the bookstore (one of those times being last night.)
