The entire thing screams Hollywood. It's clear that they wanted to add some spice to the character by making her an unusual and atypical teenager. Incorporating weird occult themes and imagery adds a level of strangeness to her persona. There isn't a single identifiable Thelemic element that bears any resemblance to Thelema as it is practiced in any of these videos. On the contrary, the very idea of strict parents that are thwarting the will of their child runs counter to the philosophy of Thelema.
The people going nuts and digging in everything looking for clues, signs and meaning probably know more about Thelema than the creators do at this point. I'm sure that is a source of amusement for them - it sure would be for me. As a Thelemite of nearly 20 years I find the portrayal of Thelema in these videos to be laughable, although I must admit reading all the dissection and theories people are coming up with is hilarious.

1) Aren't there (perhaps) other groups of people other than mainstream "Thelmites" who might employ the word "Thelma" and for what ever reason take Crowley as some kind of role model? For example, Some other kinds of Christians might regard Mormons as non-Christians, but most Mormons would (I think) consider themselves Christians. Could it not be something like that? 2) Do all "Thelmites" (broadly speaking) necessarily engage in the same practices, observe the same rituals, interpret relevant guidelines and suggestions in pretty much the same way, or is there a lot of divergence with regard to practices and ways of life? 1. I think it's a real stretch to imagine the creators researched Thelema so thoroughly that they modeled their characters' behavior and practices on some wacky and obscure group they unearthed. I imagine the process went something like this: a. Let's add something mysterious and occult to spice up the story line. b. Add sinister Crowley picture and candlestick to the set. c. Fans identify the figure and start talking about Thelema. d. Add Thelema in Greek and unicursal hexagram to the new fansite. e. Sit back, watch and incorporate items from the fans into the story line. 2. No. There are all manner of Thelemites out there, including Thelemites that have fused the philosophy (not religion) of Thelema with Buddhism, Gnostic Christianity, Setianism, and just about everything else under the sun. There are some real kooky Thelemites out there, that's for damn sure. Strict Thelemites that interfere with their child's is borderline anti-Thelemic. This is fiction. A lot of folks are looking for depth where there isn't any.

Um, this is probably a stupid question, but have any of the video posts specifically said that Bree and/or her parents were Thelmites? To the best of my recollection, only the "fan site" has overtly mentioned Thelma, and I'm having trouble pulling that up at the moment.... Even if the "fan site" is a front for LG's creators, couldn't it just be there as a red herring? I guess that's two stupid questions. Someone said the word at the bottom right of the fan site spells out Thelema in greek letters. I don't know who has taken over that site but since it's all out in the open it's possible that it's under new (official) management now.

Thelema is a greek word. Crowley took it from greek philosophy and most of the time he used it with the greek letters to show where the word came from.

I'm not entirely sure that the creators of the series know a great deal about Thelema in general, although they have probably learned alot more from some of the very knowledgeable posts on this forum! I keep wondering if there is a more simple explanation of the Crowley picture. Maybe it is a hint Bree is going to rebel against her religion? Either way it will be interesting to see how it pans out!
Cheers,

+1 karma for recognizing that Crowley can *also* be used to suggest that someone is a freethinker and a rebel.
I don't know if that was on the Norns' minds when they used the picture, but I do not at all believe they intended for the picture to make the audience quite this *paranoid.*
