www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070730/NEWS/70730054saw this in USAToday this morning (man that paper is lightweight, huh?). its all about people being mean on the internet, and starts off with quotes from brookers. But is all this stuff about people on the web getting meaner just hype? isn't just that the bile that all 14 year old boys spew is now on the internet instead of lost in locker rooms, alleys, and bedrooms covered with motley crue posters? and does a hater comment that says "i hope u die" constitute an actual "death threat" as suggested by this article?

USAToday - The News brought to by confused old people * Next week an in depth look at how rap music is corrupting the youth, despite the 'words' being indecipherable I actually find the hater comments really funny. When I would scan through my videos I would hunt them out for a chuckle. I'm convinced they have to know the irony of how writing things so idiotic actually causes the comment to make fun of the hater more then the hatey. Of course the easiest way to sum it all up was done by Penny Arcade a few years back. Perhaps instead of having those messed up images of letters and numbers you have to spell to join a forum they should have a series of questions like "Fill in the missing word: You ___ tall" if they type 'r' they are not allowed to sign up.

Haha that's an excellent plan terry, and I love the cartoon. It is true, I see things written on-line by teenagers I know and the way they interact with each other, it tends to be much different than how they are in person. People who seem to be relatively normal and proper people turn into all sorts of other things when typing that'd give you totally different ideas about them. Partly it's the whole immaturity of the age to begin with and partly trying to act a bitter rougher on-line than they actually are.
Most haters are probably no-life losers who get kicked around in real life and use the internet as an anonymous platform to treat others like they are treated without any of the real life consequences. Probably gives a small self-esteem boost. We should have pity on haters more than anything. They may seem tough and scary on-line, but clearly anyone who spends all their time finding the work of strangers and telling them how awful they are clearly aren't what we think of as 'cool'.

Warning: The following might paint a pretty bad picture of me
What I find most confusing about haters is how they never get to see the impact of their comments. That would never be satisfying to me. If I wanted to ruin Harry Potter for people or if I wanted to harass people for fun, why would I do it when I can't see the reaction?
It is like pulling a practical joke and not being there to yell 'Got Ya!' or, if you prefer, 'Punk'd'
